In continuous operation since 1749, Appleton Estate is the refined, experienced older woman of the Jamaican Rum scene. Their 12 year old is a rich and complex blend of pot and column still rums, all aged for a minimum of 12 years before being selected in the cask by master blender Joy Spence, then blended to create this classic, beloved expression of what Jamaican rum can achieve when given time and care. Bottled at 43% abv, and as with all Appleton rums, without any added sugar, flavorings, or adulterants. Aromas of caramel, coffee, leather, banana, and orange zest greet you, lightly tickling the nose. On the palate there is a surprising initial hint of fruity pot still funk, enveloped by dark chocolate and hazelnut. Incredibly full bodied, the 43% drinks like something decidedly more concentrated. The time in oak has developed a punchy spice element alongside the expected vanilla, complementing the continuing nutty chocolate flavors. The finish is long and round with a twinge of bitter coffee.
