In 1796, Master Distiller Basil Hayden Sr. defied convention by introducing small grains into the mash of a traditional corn-based bourbon. As a Maryland transplant unafraid to challenge the status quo, Basil believed that the spicy essence of rye would beautifully complement the smooth sweetness of corn in his distillery's bourbon. To the surprise of traditionalists, Basil's innovative approach proved successful. His creation became a masterpiece a small batch bourbon whiskey distinguished by rich hints of peppermint, notes of pepper, subtle citrus undertones, and a warm, spicy finish.
