Rumors suggest a tug-of-war between Maker’s Mark and Beam-Suntory. Allegedly, Beam-Suntory has been nudging Maker’s Mark to economize by increasing the barrel entry proof to 125, allowing them to dilute and extend the product further. Maker’s Mark, however, believes this would alter the bourbon's profile. Their DNA series, which I've reviewed, was reportedly not just a product of curiosity but a directive. The outcome? A reaffirmation that their 110 BEP was superior to higher proofs.
Tasting Notes:
-
Nose: A delightful blend of sweet and tart citrus fruit rinds, complemented by robust oak, toffee, and chocolate. The toasted staves likely contribute to the prominent marshmallow aroma. However, there's an unexpected tang, reminiscent of a "Flintstones Multivitamin."
-
Palate: Dominant oak wood notes with hints of barrel char. The spiciness of cinnamon and allspice is balanced by vanilla and caramel sweetness. The cherry undertones are intriguing, but the tangy notes, akin to tamarind paste and chewable vitamins, are puzzling.
-
Finish: A subdued spice with lingering cinnamon. Dessert-like flavors emerge, reminiscent of French Mendiants, combined with cherry and red fruit preserves. The finale is a unique blend of vanilla and a flat Dr. Pepper note.
